  • We started our time in Charlotte with a visit to the confederate museum.
  • Next we boarded a horse-drawn carriage for a tour of part of the city.
  • It really started to pour (no, there are no sides to the carriage). The Atlantic ocean is just on the other side of that wall, but you can't see it through the rain. Jessie and I got very wet.

  • The old homes were beautiful, but hard for me to photograph as we rode by in the rain.
  • These old cobblestones were brought over on ships from England as ballast for the ships.
  • A large earthquake in 1886 damaged many of the buildings in Charleston. Many of these masonry buildings were repaired by installing rods to hold the building together. The disks you can see on the side of this building still remain today.
  • There is an open-air market downtown that is several blocks long. This was an excellent little cafe with an interesting name.
  • This is at one end of the market where it floods when it rains hard. You can see the water is coming in the building.
  • This gives you an idea of how much water there was.
  • Walking to dinner with our new umbrellas.
  • The pond at our campsite at James Island County park.
